Description
Alaskan Native Musician and Artist
Phillip John "Aarnaquq" Charette is an Alaskan Native Musician and Artist and an established, award-winning artist and musician.

In addition to his art, his diverse talents led him recently to make a CD that features original and traditional songs on the Native flute. In addition to his music, Phillip makes concert quality Native flutes in hardwoods and low-fired clay.

Phillip performs on approximately 2 dozen different Native American flutes. His style is one that keeps listeners riveted and soothes the soul. CDs can be found on cdbaby.com, or ordered directly from him at his website.

Phillip's art work is mixed media sculptures that are a contemporary rendition of authentic Yup'ik masks. His work can be found on his website, http://www.yupikmask.com, as can his schedule of upcoming shows and past accomplishments.

Phillip, who makes his home in Oregon, is a member of the Yupiit Nation from Southwestern Alaska along the Kuskokwim River, and is enrolled through the Bureau of Indian Affairs with the Alaskan Native 13th Regional Corporation.

Phillip received two Bachelors Degrees from the University of Alaska Fairbanks, followed by a Masters Degree from Harvard. He then set out in the field of education as an administrator.

As it happens, life took over and laid his true path before him in the form of a ceramics class in 1999. In 2001 he gave up fast-track toward higher administration to pursue a full-time career in art.

The rest, as they say, is history. Phillip quickly became an artist showing in galleries and museums.

Within three years he was receiving approval into jcovetted uried shows as prestigious as the SWAI Santa Fe Indian Art Market, the Smithsonian Museum of the American Indian Holiday Art Market, and the Heard Museum Indian Art Market.

In 2006 he had two pieces accepted into the Changing Hands 2: Art Without Reservation traveling exhibit sponsored by the Museum of Art and Design in New York, and he received the SWAI Artists Choice Award at the Santa Fe Indian Art Market.

Phillip continues to expand and diversify his art, moving into bronze in 2007 and metal sculpture in 2008.

Phillip has been invited to be the first Native American to show at the Nassau Museum 12th Annual Craft Art Festival October 11, 12, and 13. Also, he will be one of Alaska's top 20 artists to be featured a New York City gallery being opened in September (more information to come).
